Gravel Banding Has Started!

I told you spring is on its way! What fantastic weather we've had for the start of this essential work, which started on the 12th green at around 8 o'clock on Monday morning (my birthday by the way!!) After running a couple of lines it became apparent that there was a little too much lytag going into the bands, ideally we wanted it to be around an inch below the surface. The idea of this is twofold, it will help the greens to settle by allowing us to roll over the bands which should help to close the majority of them up, and the second reason is, once we have finished gravel banding, we will be running the graden sand injector over the greens, and we didn't want to disturb the gravel bands too much. By injecting the sand this should 'marry' the two systems up very nicely, to produce a nice surface which should then allow us to start to reduce the thatch build up quite drastically.
Sheltons (who are the company we have employed to do the job) say that we should be able to get around a green and a half done per day. Yesterday we managed to get 2 done (12th and 7th) however today we have managed to get 3 greens done (8,5 and 2), and one of those is one of the biggest greens on the course! The staff have worked exceptionally hard, and have agreed that we need to 'make hay while the sun shines' which is why they are putting some long shifts in at the minute. I'd like to publicly thank them for being such a good bunch!
So thats 5 greens done, but 13 still to do! Tomorrow we will be trying to do the same thing, and are going for greens 3,4, and 9. So if your out and about tomorrow make sure you come and say hi!
Again, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to write something in the comment box, even if its just to wish me happy 'belated' birthday!
Regards
Leigh
